The Indian government placed limitations on the importation of tablets and laptops not too long ago. The goal was to encourage businesses to start producing laptops locally because most of the computers that are sold in India are imported.
To prevent an unexpected scarcity of computers in the nation, the government did, however, temporarily relax these regulations. On the other hand, it is evident that laptop manufacturers have gotten the message because over 23 businesses will now begin producing computers and other electronics in India right away.
Manufacturers are lining up to produce laptops in India under PLI Scheme
According to India’s Minister of Electronics and IT, Ashwini Vaishnaw, 27 companies have received approval under the country’s performance-linked incentive (PLI) program. These businesses will produce hardware equipment such as computers, servers, laptops, and other items within the nation.
Of these 27, twenty-three are prepared to begin manufacturing on the same day. In addition to receiving benefits from the government’s enhanced PLI plan, which is valued at Rs 17,000 crores, these companies would invest more than Rs 3000 crores in their industrial projects.

Many Indian companies that will produce hardware and accessories for international computer brands are included in the list. Both parties benefit from the situation, as local companies acquire technological know-how in computer production while multinational brands receive tax breaks and incentives from the Indian government.
Thomson Computing, a French company, recently announced a new collaboration with Sahasra Group, an Indian company, to produce laptops and tablets there. This team will concentrate on producing laptops that fall into the cheap range, starting at about Rs 25,000.
India’s PC Market Experiencing Record-Breaking Growth, Per Research Firm IDC, India saw record-breaking computer sales in Q3 2023. The most computers ever sold in the region were sold in the most recent quarter, totaling 4.5 million.
There are five major players in the Indian PC market: Acer, ASUS, Lenovo, Dell, and HP. In terms of national sales of computers and laptops, these companies hold an 85% market share.
Now, all five businesses are prepared to produce computers in India on a local basis. This suggests that most of the laptops sold in the nation in the next years will be produced domestically.
It is important to note that India has already found success with this strategy in the market for smartphones. Businesses such as Apple and Xiaomi produce the majority of their goods domestically. For the record, Foxconn’s Tamil Nadu factory is where the most recent iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus are made. Apple sells these devices internationally as well.
The cost of individual computers will be reduced as a result of local production, making them more accessible. Users will be able to access laptops and computers more easily as a result, similar to what happened with the rise of reasonably priced smartphones.
