The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has announced its decision to end the labor-intensive and expensive practice of physically verifying customer details before selling mobile connections, a move that is expected to alleviate pressure on Indian carriers.

Commencing on January 1, 2024, this modification is expected to decrease the expenses and duration associated with acquiring new customers while also serving as a disincentive to SIM fraud within the nation.

The conversion of the antiquated paper-based KYC (Know Your Customer) procedure to an electronic one represents a major advancement in efficiency and modernity.

According to a notification made public on Tuesday, the DoT decided to do away with paper-based KYC starting in 2024 after examining a number of changes to the current framework over time. Leaders in the industry have applauded this move, recognizing that it will help the government better control SIM fraud and significantly lower carriers’ subscriber acquisition expenses.
