A biographical sports drama film, Maidaan features the 1952 Summer Olympics in Helsinki. During this time, Syed Abdul Rahim, the Indian football coach, was at risk of being fired after the Olympics defeat, which he blamed on management issues.
However, for the next quadrennial event, he wishes to form his own team, which he does eventually, only to take the fourth position in the standings. He later had a poor showing during the 1960 Olympics, which resulted in him getting fired. Nonetheless, Rahim, who was then terminally ill, still dreams of coaching at the 1962 Asian Games.
