Ming-Chi Kuo, a trusted Apple analyst known for accurate insights, shared his thoughts about the iPhone 18 series in a Medium post. Known for sourcing information from Apple’s supply chain, Kuo revealed that the flagship iPhone 18 Pro will likely feature a major enhancement with the wide-camera lens upgraded to a variable aperture, promising an improved photography experience.
Kuo’s post indicated that the variable aperture lens will be supplied by two key original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), Sunny Optical and Largan Precision. Sunny Optical will reportedly serve as the primary supplier, while Luxshare and Largan Precision will serve as secondary suppliers, respectively providing the shutter mechanism and lens components for the variable aperture feature.
These companies have prior experience with variable aperture cameras on Android devices, such as the Xiaomi 14 Ultra and Honor Magic 6 Pro, which already feature this innovative technology. The variable aperture feature in Android phones allows adjusting the lens opening to control the amount of light entering the sensor. It allows the camera to switch between multiple f-stop settings, which influence both brightness and depth of field.
