Google unveiled Gemini, its most recent language model (LLM), to the public. Text, code, audio, photos, and video are just a few of the many forms of information that this new LLM can comprehend, work with ease, and integrate. Gemini, according to Google, is their most powerful and all-purpose AI model to date. But there’s more to it than what first glances reveal. Gemini is a series of artificial intelligence models that comes in three sizes: Gemini Ultra, Gemini Pro, and Gemini Nano. It is not a single model.
As per Google, its new flagship AI model, Gemini, is available in three different sizes, each customized to meet individual requirements, and has arrived in its initial version, version 1.0. It may operate on a wide range of platforms, including mobile phones and data centers. “Gemini was pre-trained on many modalities from the beginning and is inherently multimodal. In order to further improve its efficacy, we then adjusted it with more multimodal data,” CEO Sundar Pichai says in the official blog post.
The three sizes of Gemini
Gemini Nano: Specifically designed for mobile devices, especially the Pixel 8, Google’s Gemini Nano is a lightweight AI model. Tasks that need to be completed on-device can be done so easily and offline thanks to this effective paradigm. Gemini Nano has strong AI capabilities without depending on external servers, guaranteeing a seamless and responsive user experience. These features include summarizing text content and proposing pertinent responses in chat apps.
Gemini Pro: The more sophisticated version of Gemini AI, Gemini Pro is set to power a number of Google AI services and will provide Bard with its initial fundamental support. Gemini Pro, which uses Google’s data centers, was created especially to support Bard, our AI chatbot, in its most recent iteration. This cutting-edge technology has an amazing capacity to comprehend complicated questions and respond quickly.
Gemini Ultra: According to Google, Gemini Ultra is the most potent LLM. It is ideally suited for data centers and enterprise applications and is touted to excel at handling extremely complicated tasks. While it isn’t available everywhere just yet, Google claims that Gemini Ultra outperforms “current state-of-the-art results on 30 of the 32 widely-used academic benchmarks used in large language model (LLM) research and development.” It does better on most standard tests than other LLMs, according to this. After completing its current testing phase, Gemini Ultra—which is intended for complicated tasks—is expected to be issued.
Availability of Gemini
Beginning with Gemini Nano, Gemini AI is now available on Pixel 8 Pro devices, bringing improved functionalities like Summarize to the Recorder app and Smart Reply to Gboard—first introduced in WhatsApp. Duet AI, Chrome, Ads, Search, and other Google products and services are all part of the projected Gemini expansion.
In the meantime, Google Search is already using Gemini to accelerate the Search Generative Experience (SGE). This led to “a 40 per cent reduction in latency in English in the US, alongside improvements in quality.”
Developers and enterprise users can use Google Cloud Vertex AI or Google AI Studio’s Gemini API to access Gemini Pro as of December 13. Gemini Nano, a new feature introduced in Android 14 on Pixel 8 Pro devices, may also be used by Android developers via AICore. A limited group of clients, partners, developers, and safety specialists will have access to Gemini Ultra for early testing and feedback while it is undergoing evaluations for trust and safety. Early in the next year, a larger group of developers and business users will have access to it.
In the meantime, Bard will get an English-language version of Gemini Pro that has been carefully modified to improve its understanding, planning, and reasoning skills. Google will launch Bard Advanced in the upcoming year, giving customers early access to our most sophisticated models and features, beginning with Gemini Ultra.
