The ultra-wide angle camera on this year’s Pro models will be upgraded by Apple, while the smaller iPhone 16 Pro will have the tetraprism telephoto camera setup found on the iPhone 15 Pro Max, according to TF Securities International analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. These are the company’s purported Pro models, which are expected to be released later this year. It is also expected that the business will include an improved selfie camera with the iPhone 17 series.

iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max camera will receive an update

According to Kuo, Apple will be upgrading the 12-megapixel sensor on the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max to a 48-megapixel sensor. Kuo notes that this upgrade will result in better image quality than the iPhone 15 Pro models, but the sensor is expected to produce 12-megapixel images that are pixel binned.

The analyst claims that Taiwan-based Genius Electronic Optical, which is on track to produce the tetraprism telephoto lens for the smaller iPhone 16 Pro model, bringing its optical zoom performance on par with the larger Pro model, will be a major supplier of the ultra-wide angle lens on the iPhone 16 Pro models.

Apple updated the telephoto camera on the iPhone 15 Pro last year, allowing for an optical magnification of up to 5x. Previous rumors indicate that the iPhone 16 Pro will have comparable camera hardware to support the same features. According to Kuo, the iPhone 16 Pro is also expected to have a larger 6.27-inch display, which should encourage more consumers to upgrade when the phone arrives. This increase is projected to be between 5 and 10 percent.

Additionally, Kuo expects that Apple will “significantly” improve the image quality of the iPhone 17 series by adding a new 24-megapixel camera with a 6P lens in place of the current 12-megapixel sensor. Since a 6P lens costs 100–120 percent more than a 5P lens, Kuo predicts that Genius, the company that supplies the iPhone’s front cameras, would see a substantial increase in revenue.
